Trade of Pearl Millet

In India large quantities of pearl millet are traded from the major pearl millet growing areas to urban centres and to non-pearl millet growing areas. The trade is mainly to meet demand of pearl millet from urban consumers and to meet requirements of consumers from different income groups. The importance of pearl millet as cattle feed is increasing in recent years in northern states like Haryana and Punjab.  In Tamil Nadu, farmers growing improved cultivars of pearl millet are able to market their surplus to the animal feed sector, mainly poultry and cattle feed manufacturing units.

Pearl millet dry stover is often traded from Haryana, Punjab and UP to Rajasthan whenever pearl millet stover is in short supply in Rajasthan due to drought. Green forage of pearl millet is also traded in Gujarat during summer and provides good economic returns to farmers taking summer pearl millet.

At international level, around less than 1% of global production of millets is traded. The figure could be an underestimate since substantial quantities of millet trade are unrecorded.
